I went on a cruise to avoid my family reunion

Every year my extended family has a reunion at my aunt's lake house. Every year I attend and spend three days smiling through passive-aggressive comments about my career, my relationship status, and my cooking. This year I told everyone I had a work trip that could not be moved. I booked a solo interior cabin on MSC Seashore and spent the reunion week floating through the Mediterranean eating pasta and reading novels. My cousin texted me a photo of the lake house and said 'You are missing the fun!' I was standing in a piazza in Rome with gelato and a clear conscience. I will probably do this every year now. The lake house will manage without me. My aunt's potato salad was overrated anyway.

We ate dinner on our balcony every night and skipped the dining room

Seven-night Mediterranean cruise. Beautiful dining room, multiple specialty restaurants, all included in our package. We went to the dining room once on night one, found it too crowded and formal, and never went back. Every subsequent night we ordered room service, set up the balcony table with candles (our own, smuggled aboard in the suitcase, which I believe is technically against the rules), opened a bottle of wine (also smuggled aboard), and had dinner watching the Mediterranean sunset. The room service menu is limited but we supplemented with food from the buffet brought back in to-go containers. Our steward knew exactly what we were doing and quietly provided extra plates and glasses without comment. The dining room is beautiful. Our balcony was better.

I blamed the cabin for my snoring

My wife has been telling me I snore for fifteen years. I have been denying it for fifteen years. On this cruise, in cabin 12088, the neighbor knocked on our wall at 2am. My wife answered the door and the man from next door said 'Is there a mechanical issue in your cabin? We can hear a very loud rhythmic noise through the wall.' My wife looked at me. She looked at the neighbor. She said 'Yes, it is a mechanical issue.' She closed the door. I was pretending to be asleep. I heard every word. The next day she told me the neighbor came by and I said 'Oh what did he want?' She said 'To tell us about a ventilation problem.' We both know the truth. I have since purchased those adhesive nose strips. They help. My wife has not mentioned the ventilation problem again.

I told my coworkers I was at a conference

I told my office I was attending a professional development conference in Miami for a week. I was on Carnival Celebration sailing to the Bahamas. I even created a fake conference schedule in case anyone asked for details. On day three, my manager texted asking how the 'keynote on innovation' went. I was lying on a pool deck with a frozen drink composing a detailed fictional review of a keynote that never happened. I texted back three paragraphs about disruptive synergies and paradigm shifts. He said it sounded inspiring. I was watching a man in a Hawaiian shirt attempt to limbo. That was my inspiration. I have since used all my actual vacation days and will not need to do this again. Probably. The Bahamas were outstanding.

The hot tub incident on our private balcony

Our suite had a private hot tub on the balcony. My partner and I decided to enjoy it at midnight under the stars. Romantic. Sophisticated. Adult. What we did not anticipate was that the hot tub jets were significantly more powerful than expected. When I turned them on, water erupted over the side of the tub and cascaded off our balcony onto the balcony below us. We heard a very startled yell from downstairs. We turned the jets off immediately and sat in the tub in guilty silence for approximately three minutes before hearing laughter from below. A voice called up: 'If you are going to flood us, at least warn us next time.' We never met them face to face. We did leave an anonymous apology bottle of wine with their steward the next morning.

I ate room service breakfast in bed every single day

Seven-night cruise. Seven consecutive mornings of room service breakfast eaten entirely in bed in my interior cabin in the dark like some kind of cruise ship goblin. I did not go to the buffet once for breakfast. Not once. The room service menu is limited but I did not care. Coffee, eggs, pastries, fruit, delivered to my door. I would eat in bed watching movies on my laptop in pitch darkness while the rest of the ship was having their organized fun in the sunshine. My family thought I was at the gym. I was not at the gym. I was in bed eating eggs at 10am in a room with no windows. It was the most relaxed I have been in five years. I have no regrets and I will do it again.

We had a loud fight and the whole deck heard it

My husband and I had a spectacular argument on night three. About what? I genuinely cannot remember. Something about dinner reservations or shore excursions. The point is we were loud. We were on the balcony. Sound carries on water. I know this because the next morning at the buffet, the couple from two cabins down approached us and said, very gently, 'We just wanted to check you two are okay.' They had heard the entire thing. We were mortified. Then they said 'For what it is worth, we think you were right about the lobster.' I did not even remember discussing lobster. We apologized profusely. They became our dinner companions for the rest of the cruise. They are wonderful people. The argument is forgotten. The embarrassment is forever.

A stranger's birthday cake arrived at our cabin

Day four of our cruise. A knock at the door. A crew member holding a beautiful chocolate cake with 'Happy 50th Birthday Maria!' written on it. We are not Maria. We told him this. He checked his paperwork and confirmed this was cabin 13402. We are in cabin 13402. We are not Maria. He was confused. We were confused. He left with the cake. Twenty minutes later, another knock. Same crew member. He said Maria was in 13042 — the numbers were transposed on the order. He also said Maria was not in her cabin yet and the cake was starting to tilt. He asked if we could hold it. We held Maria's birthday cake for forty-five minutes in our cabin. When he came to retrieve it, he brought us two slices as thanks. Happy birthday, Maria, wherever you are.

The cabin number that won us trivia

Cruise ship trivia night. The question was about the number of lifeboats on a specific ship. Nobody knew the answer. My husband, an engineer who memorizes numbers involuntarily, said 'Well our cabin number is the same as the displacement tonnage of the first Carnival ship divided by...' and somehow arrived at the correct answer through a chain of mental math that made no sense to anyone at the table but turned out to be right. We won the trivia tournament by one point. The prize was a keychain and a coupon for twenty percent off a spa treatment. We were treated like celebrities at dinner that night. Our cabin number, 11080, has become a lucky number in our household. My husband brings it up at every party. I let him.

The stingray that watched us eat breakfast

Docked in Grand Cayman. Eating breakfast on our balcony, port side facing the tender dock. A massive stingray — easily five feet across — was circling in the water directly below our balcony. It stayed for over an hour, just gliding in slow circles. My partner started dropping small pieces of croissant into the water, which I told him was almost certainly not allowed. The stingray did not eat the croissant. A seagull did. The stingray continued its serene circles, unbothered by the seagull, unbothered by us, unbothered by existence. We named it Raymond. Ray for short. We watched Raymond until the tender boats started running and he glided away. Sometimes I think about Raymond's perfect, peaceful life and I am envious.

I skipped every port to stay in the cabin

Seven-night Caribbean cruise. Five ports of call. I skipped every single one. My partner went ashore and explored while I stayed on the ship in our cabin or by the pool. Here is my confession: I told everyone I was 'feeling under the weather' each port day. The truth is I just did not want to leave. The ship with two thousand fewer people on board is paradise. The pool is empty. The buffet has no lines. The spa has immediate availability. I read three entire books on that balcony while the ship was docked. My partner would come back sunburned and full of stories about ruins and markets and I would nod enthusiastically from my deck chair having not moved in six hours. I am not ashamed. I am at peace.

The romantic balcony evening that went sideways

My husband arranged a romantic evening on our balcony. Candles borrowed from the spa, wine, chocolate, the whole production. We were having a genuinely beautiful moment watching the stars when he leaned in for a kiss and knocked the wine bottle off the side table. It did not go overboard — it shattered on the balcony floor. We were barefoot. We were trapped on a balcony covered in broken glass and red wine with no shoes. We had to call the cabin steward at 11pm to rescue us. He arrived with a broom and a completely neutral expression that suggested this was not his first balcony wine emergency. We tipped him heavily. The romantic evening continued indoors. With plastic cups.
